The Crossroads View

We are building!

Please enjoy your visit to The Daily Hope while we are under construction, and come back to see us again as we add new material. We always welcome your comments and suggestions.

Are religious conservatives really “against science”? Are political progressives really “against God”? One of the great misperceptions of our time is that there is intrinsic conflict between ‘secular’ and ‘sacred’ views of reality, with people on both sides of the political spectrum dismissive and fearful of the others’ reality – and failing to perceive the Oneness that unites all.

Our longing for justice and fairness, our desire to “do the right thing”, to be responsible for ourselves and generous toward others – reflect the sacred truth of our being, our family bond as children of the Divine – even when we hold them as ‘secular’ values. Most of us basically agree on what is most important. We get in trouble when we try to understand how to put these values into practice, here on the ground where we live, with our fickle bodies, hearts and minds needing comfort, security, support. There we come up against big differences between one person’s understanding and another’s of what the world is and how things should be done – and get into serious, sometimes lethal conflict over these differences, not knowing that at heart we seek the same things.

Tragically, those with a self-proclaimed ‘secular’ orientation largely see those with ‘sacred’ orientation as the enemy, and vice versa. The secret is, there is no division – but we get too locked into our habitual mindsets to see that. To wish for common decency, common sense, intelligent planning and basic fairness in the management of human affairs is a given for most of us. These are sacred values, to want to use wisely and well the gifts we have been given, our miraculous bodies, our magnificent world. So then, what should inform our understanding of how to go about achieving them?

To create and sustain a future that supports the freedom and well-being of every human soul as well as the safety and security of each person – and protects the life of the Earth itself – our ground-level “secular” decisions must be based upon understanding the sacred values that underlie them.

In this section we look at common objectives for society (US and global) that most of us would agree upon, that are now conceived as political, economic, or social goals – in other words, secular goals – and translate them into an integrated reality bridging the two world views. In other parts of Building the Future, we will look at innovations being made around the world to bring us forward into that reality. And we will offer a glance into another world – one that looks a whole lot like Planet Earth, and not impossibly far in the future – wherein the integrated reality is starting to become reflected in the way we live day to day.
